Backuping  and Recover the Exchange server using NTBACKUP - Advice Please......
Hello Team The below advice needs for my Lab Environment, to know the backuping process in exchange server using NTBACKUP in Server 2003 Environment. i have 2 separate exchange Organization (ABC.com and Xyz.co.in) and the email flow between the two is perfect. My Exchange Version is 2007 32 bit which is running on Windows Server 2003. ABC.COM - One Exchange server having the roll of MBX, CAS, and HT Xyx.co.in - Two Exchange Server - One Server having the roll of MBX, and CAS. and Another server having the roll of HT. All the Mailbox Server is having only one Storage Group and Only One Database , No more Public Folder Storage Group and Database for Database. Number of Mailbox in the database is 25 as it is test environment, and days per mail between the organization is 5 to 10 Max with 5 MB attachement. Now i would like the take the backup of all the three roles on daily basis like full Backup? or Increemental and Diifferentail Backup? When to take full backup, and when to take incremental Backup? and when to take Differential Bakup? also i would like to know , how it can be restore from the Backup if the DB or Harddisk is falied or corrupted. (Currently No LCR,CCR,ENABLED) from the backup? How can i restore if my CAS and HT is Failed ?. Basically i would like to know the Backup and restore process in Exchange 2007 for my above test lab Environment?

Now i would like the take the backup of all the three roles on daily basis like full Backup? or Increemental and Diifferentail Backup? I would suggest that you perform full daily backups. This will commits transaction logs onto the database. See the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998870%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx When to take full backup, and when to take incremental Backup? and when to take Differential Bakup? I would consider incremental base on your SLA. I do not think differential commits transaction logs. also i would like to know , how it can be restore from the Backup if the DB or Harddisk is falied or corrupted. (Currently No LCR,CCR,ENABLED) from the backup? You can use RSG. If the hd fails, then you'll need to restore the server first before you can use RSG. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997694%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx How can i restore if my CAS and HT is Failed ?. For hub, see: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998634%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx. For CAS, see: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998364%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx. Basically i would like to know the Backup and restore process in Exchange 2007 for my above test lab Environment? Backup and restore process for e-mail in Exchange 2007 with Server 2003 is simple. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997694%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx

Hi Jose Thanks for your links which you provided. It would be very usefull Now i had initiated the backup of my database on daily basis - Full Backup. but the time where the backup started is 1.00AM , At that time my online maintence is going for the database. Am able to get the successfull backup. but is there any impact to the server , like Perfoamnce issue and mailbox Slowness etc.....? What could be the problem if the Backup and onlime Database maintence will run on the same time? Could you please explain or any Link? Thanks in advance/

Your on-line defrag (part of the on-line maintenance) is terminated when the basckup process begins. It will resume then the backup is completed (provided that the online maintenance window hasn't ended). >What could be the problem if the Backup and onlime Database maintence will run on the same time? But you should still schedule the online maintenance to take place at a time when backups aren't running. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

hi Rich, Thanks for your reply. I thing we misunderstood. Am asking you that, I schedule the backup time, when the Online maintence is running by default time,(From 1.00 AM to 5.00AM). however my backup job is complelted without fail also online mailnetence is completd. You said that "Thay won't run at the same time" Which one woin't run?

When the backup starts the on-line defrag is suspended (check your application log for events with the source "ESE"). When the backup completes the on-line defrag will resume within 15 minutes. So, both will run, just not concurrently. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Ensure that you do not schedule the online maintenance at the same time as the backup.
